BMAC & WRASC Updates

BMAC's new Creek trail in the West Rutland Forest is now open. As you come down off the switchback on the west side of Farrell's Mann MT. instead of turning left, turn right and follow the trail. It eventually follows Young's Brook and comes out on BMAC's West Rutland Clark Hill trail. Turning right takes you down Clark Hill and stops at Dewey Ave. Turn left and a few hundred yds. takes you to the old snowmobile bridge. We are also very pleased to announce that we have a signed Landowner permission for the old Day property sections and will now be able to open the new trail that the Town of West Rutland gave us permission for in the Spring of this year, from the 1 mi. Loop that will head north and come out on the trail that heads over to Birdseye MT. Please watch for details on upcoming work detail to ready the trail for the excavator. WRASC has also been given tentative permission to keep and maintain a section of trail on the east side of Herrick Mountain to re-connect the BMAC trail between Clark Hill Road and Brian's Lookout. This section is not open yet. Please be patient and stay off this section except for allowed trail work coordinated between the 2 clubs. BMAC club trail ride & picnic (bring your own lunch) meet 10:00 am Sunday Aug. 26 on WRASC trails, Woodlawn in Pawlet/Danby. The trail head is just off of Route 30 on Towslee Hill Rd. It is just 1 and 1/2 mi. south of the village of Pawlet on Route 30. Turn left across a bridge, that is Towslee Hill Rd. Pull onto the road and immediately to the right hand side of the road is a grassy area with trees along the brook. This is the trail head. It has no sign due to the Land Trust not allowing to post a sign there. The area belongs to Fred Stone Message from WRASC; Work detail is slotted for Sat. Aug. 25th at 9am for cutting brush and trees on our newly contracted property in the Middletown area. Meeting on North Rd in Middletown at the log yard that is about half mile up where it turns to a class 4. It is about 2.5 miles up the class 3 & 4 rds and that road is passable by vehicle to that point easily. Unload at the log yard and the group will be working on cutting brush, trees, and brushy stuff. So clippers, pruners, whackers with blades on them and chainsaws will be needed. We will need as many people as possible to knock this work out since we want to get heavy equipment in there ASAP to get these trails set up for next season. These are some trails we have been working to get since last year. Message from Chris Sabisch Trail Coordinator of WRASC. Well here is the updates on NEW trails for the 2013 riding season. Woodlawn mountain will have a new loop trail added. As of now Trail #9 is a deadend, this trail will be extended to connect with Trail #1. Herrick Mountain Area: We have received a contract for the property to the south of the 6 Mile Loop Trail and bordering the Class 4 Ira/Middletown Springs Road. This property along with a trail off of the 6 Mile Loop will give us a new and legal connector trail with BMAC. We also hope to have a least one new loop trail on this new property. WRASC has also been given tentative permission to keep and maintain a section of trail on the east side of Herrick Mountain to re-connect the BMAC trail between Clark Hill Road and Brian's Lookout It has been a tough year between repairing the damage from Irene, trails closed due to logging and ownership changes, researching and getting contracts for new properties, routine trail maintenance, and all of the administrative duties our elected board does. Despite all this we have overcome this year's "problems" and next year looks like it will be a great one with expanded trails and a re-connection with our sister club BMAC. Thank you to all of you that have contributed in one way or the other. Chris Sabisch ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Happy Trails from BMAC!

BMAC now has law enforcement on BMAC/VASA trails

Dave & I escorted our Rutland County Sherrif on the trails and class 3. So, be fore warned and I will try to define this in writing, it will be posted at the kiosk and Rusty will be working on new maps. Any questions, ask! Make sure you have your VASA plate and up-to-date TAD on the plate and on the front of your vehicle. Carry proof of registration and insurance. Wear your helmet. With our land owner permission from the town of Ira, it is in the Town ordinance that all atv's must belong to VASA, so if you have friends, neighbors or fellow riders that ride on Ira West Rd., the small section of class 4 on the East Birdseye Rd. or any of our trails, you'd better warn them that they must register their atv and be a member of VASA, carry insurance and wear a helmet if they want to continue to ride where they have all their lives. Also, the section of trail from West road to the snowmobile bridge is not a class 4 and there is a prominent town sign stating it is only for landowners and permitted vehicles. This means it is not open to jeeps, pickups, cars, etc. But it is open to the landowners and valid VASA atv's because we have Town permission. From the Trailhead, you cannot turn left and go down West Rd. to the Cross Rd. this is not in the Town ordinance. You must access the trail system by crossing West Rd. and proceeding from there on the trail. On the East Birdseye Rd., when VASA terminated the landowner agreement with Mr. Davis, BMAC and the Town of Ira agreed that there was no need of atv use from the powerline on East Birdseye Rd. from Mr. Davis's land up to the class 4, so that section is no longer part of our VASA trail. VASA signs clearly define this. Herrick MT is still closed at the top of the 2 mi. loop due to logging and the landslide section on the trail to East Birdseye Rd. is still closed, we hope to have that open soon. As soon as it is, I'll let you know. In 2 weeks VASA is sending us an excavator and the Young's Brook trail will repaired and open for riding. And the trail to Brian's Lookout will be repaired The MiddletownHill trail that is shared by BMAC & WRASC is being taken care of by WRASC and we are hoping to have that open soon.

West Rutland Memorial Day Parade Reminder! We set up behind the West Rutland school at 9:30 am and have been invited to the ceremonies at the school if we wish to attend. The Town of West Rutland shows their support of BMAC by allowing us permission to use a trail system on their Town lands and forest. Lets have a good show of support for the Town's Memorial Day parade that honors our service members, those that fought and died for our freedom and those that are guarding it now. Clean up your atv's, wear your helmet, add some patriotic decorations if you wish. The important thing is make an effort to show our thanks to the Town, it's people and our service people. After the parade there will be a potluck picnic at the BMAC Trailhead, bring a dish to share. And ride afterwards. Happy & Safe Trails.

Limited All-Terrain Vehicle Reciprocity NH & VT

May 15, 2012 Coming Soon: Limited All-Terrain Vehicle Reciprocity with Vermont CONCORD, N.H. – All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) enthusiasts in New Hampshire and Vermont will soon be able to enjoy limited ATV reciprocity between the two states. During 2012 and 2013, from May 23 through December 1, ATVs that are properly registered in Vermont may be operated in New Hampshire on state ATV trails without being required to obtain a New Hampshire Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle (OHRV) registration. Likewise, properly registered New Hampshire ATVs may operate in Vermont on approved ATV trails during the May 23 to December 1 time period without the requirement to purchase a state of Vermont registration, however a Vermont All Terrain Vehicle Sportsmen Association (VASA) trail pass is required on VASA trails, as well as proof of having completed an approved ATV safety class for operators under 18 years of age. This rule includes a two-year sunset provision and will end on December 1, 2013. Vermont ATV enthusiasts riding in New Hampshire must follow all applicable laws and rules governing operation, include youth operation requirements, spark arrestors, exhaust requirements, etc. Any operator 12 years of age and over must show proof of an approved safety education class or possess a valid motor vehicle driver's license. An ATV is defined as any motor-driven vehicle which has one or more low-pressure tires (less than 10 pounds per square inch), weighing less than 1,000 pounds and not exceeding 50 inches in width. Therefore, operation of side-by-side utility vehicles (UTVs) and trail bikes is not included in this new rule. These vehicles must be properly registered in New Hampshire to ride here, and may only ride in approved areas. For New Hampshire OHRV rules and information visit www.ride.nh.gov or www.nhtrails.org. In Vermont: www.vtvasa.org.

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Saturday May 5 is Green Up day. Anyone that wishes to help green up can meet at the BMAC Trailhead 9-10 am and use your ATV to ride down West Rd. to the Ira Town Hall where you can pick up Green Up VT bags. The main purpose is to clean the road sides on West Rd. from the Ira Town Hall to where the dirt road meets the black top heading into West Rutland on West Rd. There is also some roadside trash inside the trailhead. If you have green or orange safety vests we would advise you wearing them/gloves/bug spray and please be aware of vehicle traffic. All bags can be left at the Town Garage just down from the Trailhead or at the entrance to the BMAC Trailhead. The Town truck usually comes through to pick up from 11-12 noon. Once the trails open at noon, please keep an eye out for any trash/bottles or cans on the trails and pick up. Sunday May 6 is our May club meeting at the BMAC Trailhead at our new time, 4:00 pm.
